Hydraulic Cylinders for Construction Machinery
Beyond excavators, construction sites run on dozens of other hydraulic cylinders: loader arms, grader blades, crane and concrete-pump outriggers, steering and compactor drums. Each machine combines high loads with dust, mud and weather.
Fenitsa builds heavy-duty and custom cylinders for construction machinery manufacturers and replacement cylinders for machines in the field.

Cylinders Across Construction Machinery
| Machine | Cylinder roles | Design focus |
|---|---|---|
| Wheel loaders | Lift, tilt, steering | Shock loads, high cycle count |
| Backhoe loaders | Backhoe boom/dipper, loader, stabilisers | Many cylinders, compact mounting |
| Graders | Blade lift, tilt, side shift | Precise positioning, long strokes |
| Mobile cranes | Outriggers, luffing | Load holding, safety valves |
| Concrete pumps | Outriggers, boom sections | Long strokes, stability |
| Compactors, pavers | Steering, screed lift | Heat and vibration |
Outrigger Cylinders: A Safety-Critical Case
Outrigger (stabiliser) cylinders carry the machine and its load. They must never retract under load: a pilot-operated check valve fitted directly on the cylinder locks the oil in both chambers, and the cylinder is sized for the maximum ground reaction when the crane or pump boom is at full reach.
For example, an outrigger carrying 200 kN at 250 bar needs 8,000 mm² of area — a theoretical bore of 100.9 mm, so a Ø125 mm cylinder with a load-holding valve is chosen.
Standard, Heavy-Duty or Custom
General positioning tasks are covered by the FDH series; shock-loaded mobile functions by the heavy-duty KHS series; tight spaces by the welded THS series. Our standard hydraulic series are built for 160 bar working and 240 bar test pressure with a 250 bar option, bores from Ø40 to Ø200 mm and strokes up to 5,000 mm, using honed St52 tube and Ck45 rods hard-chrome plated to at least 20 µm. Anything outside that envelope is engineered as a custom cylinder.

What to check, and how often, in this application.
- DailyGrease pins and check rods; look for outrigger creep.
- WeeklyTest outrigger load-holding with the machine on its stabilisers.
- Every 500 hoursInspect wipers and rod seals.
- YearlyPressure-test safety-critical cylinders and valves.
Hydraulic Cylinders for Construction Machinery – FAQ
Which cylinders on construction machines are safety-critical?
Outrigger, boom luffing and load-lifting cylinders — they need load-holding valves and conservative sizing.
Can you supply cylinders for several machine types?
Yes — loaders, graders, cranes, concrete pumps and more, from standard series or built to drawing.
How do I specify a replacement construction cylinder?
Machine model, position, closed length, stroke, bore, rod, mountings and ports — or send the old cylinder.
What causes outrigger cylinders to creep?
Internal leakage or a leaking check valve; the cylinder and valve should be tested immediately.
