What Is an H-Type Bearing?
An H-type bearing is the bracket that supports the trunnion pins of a trunnion cylinder from both sides and bolts to the machine. Its H-shaped body holds the cylinder axis steady while it swings.
With trunnion cylinders the two bearings must be aligned and parallel, otherwise the pins bind and the cylinder cannot swing freely.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between H- and U-type bearings?
The body shape and bolting pattern; choose by the mounting surface on your machine.
Why must the bearings be aligned?
Misalignment binds the trunnions, stiffens the swing and creates side load.
Do the bearings need lubrication?
Periodic greasing of the pivot surfaces extends their life.
Installing an H-Type Bearing
The H-type bearing bolts to the machine through its side faces and grips the trunnion from both sides. Fit both bearings loosely, seat the cylinder’s trunnions, swing the cylinder by hand through its full arc to check for binding, and then tighten the bolts in a cross pattern.
Side-face mounting suits frames with vertical mounting faces on either side of the cylinder. Grease the pivot surfaces periodically and renew pins or bushes when play appears.
H-Type Bearing Alignment Steps
- Assemble the trunnion cylinder with both bearings on the bench first.
- Place the bearings on the vertical side faces of the machine and tighten the bolts by hand.
- Swing the cylinder by hand through its full angle; if it binds, shift the bearings until it moves freely.
- Once it swings freely, tighten the bolts in a crosswise sequence.
- Re-check bolt torque and trunnion play after the first week of operation.
